Possibilism in geography is, thus, considered as a distinct approach to geographical knowledge, directly opposed to geographical determinism. Possibilism in cultural geography is the theory that the environment sets certain constraints or limitations, but culture is otherwise determined by social conditions. Possibilism is the view that the physical environment provides the opportunity for a range of possible human responses and that people have considerable discretion to choose between them (Dictionary of Human Geography 3 rd edition, 1994). Areas that are too cold, too hot or too dry cannot have cultures that would be successful. Hence, Darwin's views were started to be applied in the science of geography (Tümertekin & Özgüç, 2014, p. The term Possibilism means that the environment only limits the number of choices that a person has. Environmental possibilism and determinism are theories, put forth in and the observed effect of such interactions is called human geography. Humans can alter the environment to best serve. Possibilism: -environmental conditions may limit some human actions, but people have the ability to adjust their environment.
